Catweazle and other wizard books
Catweazle
Catweazle was created by the author / screenwriter Richard Carpenter. There were two British television series which were produced by London Weekend Television and several books and annuals. The series is now available on DVD.
Catweazle was a wizard who, with his toad called Touchwood, was transported from the 11th Century to the 1970's where he befriended a young red headed boy named Carrots. Catweazle's main aim was to return to his own time as the modern world was a complete mystery to him. The first episode was called "The Sun in a Bottle", which was Catweazle's interpretation of a lightbulb. It is the little things like this which makes the series such a delight. His reaction to modern technology, as it was in the 1970's, is very funny.
Catweazle is a timeless classic. The series was full of magic and an innocence which seems to be now lost. Part of the charm is the fact that Catweazle is part of the television era which relied on storyline rather than special effects. It was and still is, perfect Sunday afternoon viewing.
